Rhodes (or Rodos) is an island in the Aegean Sea, the largest of the Dodecanese Island complex and the third largest of the Greek islands. It is facing the shores of Asia Minor, which are about 9-10 kilometers away. The population of the island exceeds 110.000 and it covers an area of 1398 square kilometers. Its landscape mainly comprises of hills and low mountains, which in their majority are covered with forests. It's climate is subtropical and healthy. Refreshing westerly winds moderate the summer heat, while the winter is nearly always mild. With 300 sunny days per year the island holds the Greek sunshine record.
Throughout the centuries, Rhodes' colourful history has been influenced by many cultures and civilizations, most notably the Medieval Knights of St. John. The Old(Medieval) Town, built by the Knights of St. John in the Middle Ages, bears brilliant architecture of the period. The Old Town overlooks the Mandraki Harbour which is guarded by two bronze deer. This is supposedly where the legendary Colossus, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, once stood. Being at the crossroads of two continents, Rodos combines the worldliness of Europe with the mystery of the Orient in an atmosphere that is truly fascinating.
But Rodos is more than that. It is one of the most developed islands in the Mediterranean and it provides its visitors with every holiday amenity including large and modern hotels of international standards, yachting harbour, entertaining night life, casino and sports facilities. The airport of Rodos is international with direct flights to major international cities and other Aegean islands. How to reach Rhodes
Rhodes can be reached from most international airports via Athens. The flying time from Athens to Rhodes is approximately 50 minutes. Nearly all international scheduled flights arriving in Athens allow adequate time for making the connecting flight to Rhodes. Numerous charter flights from different European cities, fly directly to the island during the summer period.
Another way to reach the island is by a regular ferry boat service from the port of Piraeus. The boat trip takes approximately 13-18 hours depending on the ferry and the ports of call.
